Connect to your storage (SMB, NFS, SFTP)
Bijgewerkt 7 november 2026
Your storage can be reached over SMB, NFS and, on request, SFTP. All the details you need are in the dashboard: open your storage service and look under Access details (host and username) and Shares.
1. Allow your IP address
Under Shares, each SMB and NFS share has Allowed IP addresses. Click Edit, enter one IP address or range per line (for example 198.51.100.10 or 198.51.100.0/24) and click Save. Only those addresses can connect.
Your home or office address may change now and then. If a connection that used to work suddenly fails, check this list first.
2. Connect over SMB
- Windows:
net use Z: \\HOST\SHARE /PERSISTENT:YES - macOS: in Finder, choose Go › Connect to Server and enter
smb://HOST. - Linux:
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/storage
sudo mount -t cifs -o username=YOUR_USERNAME //HOST/SHARE /mnt/storage
Replace HOST, SHARE and YOUR_USERNAME with the values from the dashboard.
When you connect over SMB, you may see a list with the share names of other customers. That's how SMB lists shares. Only your own share opens with your username and password; the others stay closed.
3. Connect over NFS
NFS is meant for servers, for example your cloud server at Faastic. Allow the server's IP address, then:
sudo mount -t nfs HOST:/PATH /mnt/storage
The exact path of your share is under Shares.
SFTP
SFTP is off by default. Open a ticket under Support to switch it on. Good to know before you ask:
- Your files move into a
/filesfolder, and from then on only/filesis writable, over every protocol. Update the paths in your mounts, scripts and backup jobs. We take a snapshot first, so nothing gets lost. - You can log in with an SSH key instead of a password. Send us your public key (never the private one) and tell us if password login should be switched off.
- It's SFTP only: there's no shell, so tools that need to run commands on the server, such as rsync over SSH and Borg, don't work. Restic works well over SFTP, for example
sftp:YOUR_USERNAME@HOST:/files/restic.
Mount with SSHFS
On Linux you can mount the storage over SFTP with SSHFS. Add these options to your /etc/fstab line, so the mount reconnects by itself after a dropped connection:
YOUR_USERNAME@HOST:/files /mnt/storage fuse.sshfs _netdev,reconnect,ServerAliveInterval=15,ServerAliveCountMax=3,IdentityFile=/root/.ssh/id_ed25519 0 0
Without reconnect, the mount point quietly turns empty after a few days.
Can't connect?
- Check that your current IP address is in Allowed IP addresses.
- Check the host and username under Access details, and your password.
- SMB can't get through? Some internet providers and routers block port 445, which SMB uses. Test from another network, or use SFTP instead.
Still stuck? Open a ticket with the protocol you use and the exact error message.
